Thanks to the help of some brave rescuers, this incredibly lucky donkey has a lot to smile about.
Earlier this week, Suzanne Gibbons of Ireland’s Animal Heaven Animal Rescue got word that floodwaters had filled a nearby farm, leaving a donkey stranded in a ditch. Gibbons gathered up her crew, headed to the field and posted a call for backup on her Facebook page.
“At first I couldn’t find anybody willing to help me go in because the river was flooding really badly,” Gibbons explained to BuzzFeed News.
Gibbons’ wishes were granted when Mike Fleming of the Killorglin Rowing Club saw her plea for help and rushed to assist her efforts. The two worked together to bring the donkey, which they later named Mike, to safety.
The rescue was far from simple. Fleming brought a boat along to help rescue Mike, but he was unsure if it was large enough to bring the animal back safely. Thankfully, the pair were able to put a life preserver around the donkey and tow him safely to shore.
A photo (see above) taken of Gibbons and the donkey, now named Mike, has quickly gone viral. Mike appears to have a huge smile on his face in the image, which was taken just minutes after his rescue from the ravaging floodwaters.
Gibbons has been posting regular updates on Mike through posts on the Animal Heaven Animal Rescue Facebook page. “We loved every moment saving Mike and I think I speak for all of us,” Gibbons wrote, “He was so worth the danger just to see his little face on dry land.”
