The wife of “American Pie” singer-songwriter Don McLean has filed for divorce following a domestic abuse incident earlier this year.
The Associated Press reports that Patrisha McLean filed divorce papers in Maine on March 10, citing “adultery, cruel and abusive treatment, and irreconcilable differences.” The move comes just weeks after Don McLean was arrested and charged with domestic violence on January 18. The couple had been married for 30 years.
According to court documents, Patrisha told police her husband had “pressed the palms of his hands against my temples and squeezed as though my head were in a vice,” which has caused her severe headaches since the incident. She also alleged that McLean has a “violent temper” and previously threatened to kill her.
Last month, the 70-year-old pled not guilty to all counts of domestic violence, criminal threatening, terrorizing, criminal restraint, obstruction and criminal mischief. After the incident, he explained that it was a result of a “breakdown of an almost 30-year marriage” through a series of messages posted to his Twitter account. According to Billboard, Patrisha McLean’s attorney, Gene Libby, says his client has gained “strength and insight away from [her husband’s] influence and control.”
Don McLean’s representatives confirmed the court filings, but provided no further comments in regards to the divorce.
