Don McLean broke his silence on his recent domestic violence arrest via Twitter, sort-of explaining the ordeal as a “very painful breakdown of an almost 30-year relationship.”
The “American Pie” singer was arrested at his Camden, Maine home shortly after 2 AM on Jan. 18.
The 70-year-old McLean used six tweets to tell his fans and followers he is “not a villain”, and that he hopes he will “not be judged by this frantic media environment.” The victim in the attack was confirmed to be his wife Patrisha, though other details are scarce.
As a rule of his $10,000 bond release, McLean is not allowed to contact his wife until his arraignment, which is scheduled for Feb 22.
McLean is best known for the song “American Pie”, which laments his and America’s loss of innocence after “The Day The Music Died” — the tragic plane crash that killed American music legends Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper.
