How to Craft Glitzy, Glamorous Holiday Antlers

Tinsel, pine cones and snowmen are so last year. Antlers are the real secret to making any room feel like part of Santa’s personal chalet. Don’t worry, you won’t have to become an avid hunter, outdoorsmen or passionate taxidermist to get this look.

The folks over at HOW TO: Live Your Style came up with this Santa-worthy antler canvas. It only takes the most basic crafting tools (and lots of glitter) to make a chic Christmas decoration from scratch.

Crafting Supplies

  • Medium to large canvas
  • Yardstick
  • Pencil
  • Painter’s tape
  • Black, high gloss paint
  • Foam paint brushes
  • Antler stencil
  • Gold paint pen
  • White school glue
  • Gold glitter
  • Spray sealant

Measuring and Taping

Start with a large enough canvas to comfortably fit your desired antler shape. Measure 2-inch segments down the length of the canvas using the yardstick and pencil.

You should have horizontal stripes going across your canvas when it is set up as a portrait.

Tape every other 2-inch-wide section with painters tape so that you have a tidy, striped canvas. Make sure to wrap the ends of the tape all the way around the edges of the canvas so you can paint the sides, too.

Paint and Peel

Paint the bare canvas with black paint. Let it dry and add a second coat. You could also opt for red, green, gray or blue as your paint choice to change up the look.

Peel off the tape once the second coat has dried completely.

Set and Trace

Set your antler stencil onto the center of the canvas. Trace around the edges of the stencil with a pencil.

Follow up the pencil outline with your paint pen to make a bold, clear outline for your glittery antlers.

Glue and Glitter

Here’s where the messy fun begins! Squeeze some white school glue into the center of your antler shape.

Paint the glue in an even layer inside the entire antler shape using a foam brush. Don’t leave out any tiny antler points.

Cover your sticky holiday antlers with your choice of glitter. Gold is popular but silver, green or red would look gorgeous.

Clean and Set

Dump the excess glitter into a bag. Clean up the edges of your antlers with a clean foam brush so that you get a crisp final effect.

Set your gloriously glittery antlers with a little spray sealant so that none of those glittery pieces can ever escape again! Voila!

This craft could turn into a completely personalized glitter-fest. Try a Christmas tree stencil, Santa’s sleigh or pinecones instead of antlers.
