A birdwatcher saw something he never expected while searching for some feathered beauties at the Frampton Marsh Nature Reserve in Lincolnshire, U.K.
While scouring the landscape, he noticed a group of cows circled around something odd. An adorable but frightened baby seal was stuck in the middle of a large mud puddle on the nearby beach.
When he realized what he was looking at, he ran over to assess the situation. With the help of a local seal rescue organization, the tiny creature was rescued from the mud.
“Once we got the pup back to Natureland, she went straight into the Seal Hospital to begin treatment,” Seal Sanctuary director Duncan Yeadon told ABC News. “Her main problem is that at only 5 days old, she was orphaned and therefore had not fed for a while, she had lost quite a lot of weight and was dehydrated.”
According to Yeadon, it was lucky that the seal was spotted. “We know she wouldn’t have survived out there if she was just left there on the beach,” he said.
The female seal pup was named Celebration, as a nod to the sanctuary’s 50th anniversary. Celebration will recover at the hospital for the next few months before she’s released back into the wild. Until then, she’ll be making visitors smile at a public exhibit within their facility.
