This Southern Town Has More Christmas Cheer Than the North Pole

A tiny town in South Carolina becomes the ultimate Christmas wonderland for four days in November and December. Rock Hill, S.C. is transformed into ChristmasVille, a community that’s “filled with music and merriment and festive folks brimming with good cheer.”

Each year, residents hold over 70 events, including historic tours and horse-drawn carriage rides to Santa activities, Dickens carolers and ice skating. If you love art, music, theater, and dance, there are also a bunch of activities in these categories to enjoy. You can even watch as 20 tons of real snow fall from the sky!

It takes a lot of work to pull off something this big. Almost 300 people come out to help decorate the town and get everything ready for the event. But all the hard work is more than worth it. ChristmasVille draws somewhere around 75,000 people and $2.6 million in revenue for the town.

This year’s festivities kick off on Nov. 30, but many fun activities lead up to the big day. The town sponsors both a Gingerbread House Workshop and and a LEGO Design Contest during the month of November. You can check out the full list of events before and during the festival here.

The magic of the festival revolves around the work of Vernon Grant. Many of the drawings and magical art included in ChristmasVille are his creations. However, he is most well-known for being the creator of the Kellogg’s Snap! Crackle! and Pop! characters. He’s also behind many of the whimsical magazine covers for Collier’s and Ladies Home Journal.
