Chris Stapleton shines a harsh light on the reality of mental health issues in his devastating new video for “Fire Away.”
Directed by Tim Mattia, the gut-wrenching video follows the blooming relationship between two characters, played by Ben Foster and Margarita Levieva. As the two begin their lives together in a brand new house, things quickly begin to unravel.
The video’s powerful message was born out of a partnership with The Campaign to Change Direction, an organization that hopes to change the culture of mental health in America. The organization’s Five Signs of suffering emotionally, which include change in personality, agitation, withdrawal, decline in personal care and hopelessness, are intentionally displayed by Levieva’s character to show how symptoms of mental issues are often ignored or overlooked.
The video’s bleak ending is one that is also the sad reality for thousands of Americans whose loved ones have taken their own lives. Stapleton’s choice to use his newfound fame to bring awareness to one of the country’s most taboo subjects is a testament to who he is, both as an artist and human being. Although it is utterly difficult to watch, it is also one of the most important country music videos that has been released in years.
