Chip and Joanna Gaines Dish on Keeping a Marriage Marriage Happy While Working Together

Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines spend a lot of time with each other, and they have a few tips for keeping a marriage happy and healthy while working together.

The Gaines are raising four children, and they're working in tandem on their successful remodeling and design business. The HGTV stars recently opened up to People about how they balance it and — why it's not right for everyone.

"Two things come to mind," Chip said. "This is really not for everybody so don't feel insecure or try to force something if it's not. The negative is if it's not meant to be, don't try to force it. It is not for everybody. And don't worry about it that it's not for everybody. Who cares?"

Chip added that if couples do decide to go into business together, they should focus on what they're good at.

Joanna's take is that if things aren't quite working, don't hesitate to bring in a third party to help. They can fix problems before they get too big and, ultimately, end in divorce.

"If you can't figure it out bring in someone that will help so you don't end up ending your marriage," she explained. "And allow yourself room to make mistakes. We always allow on every budget, we have a side, 10 percent contingency as I may pick the wrong pink color. Just always have it so it's not the end of the world and you're not so stressed out."

Their last piece of advice? Always remember to keep your sense of humor. You can watch them crack jokes while remodeling on Tuesday nights on HGTV.
