Between the “Forever Country” series and George Strait’s new box set, we’re getting a lot of great covers of classic country. Some notable Texas country stars covered their favorite George Strait songs in honor of his upcoming box set Strait Out of the Box: Part 2.
We’ve seen Randy Rogers, Cody Johnson and Aaron Watson deliver memorable covers, but this time it’s Casey Donahew’s turn. Donahew and a few bandmates took a stab at his favorite Strait song, “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” while on the bus. And they deliver.
The no-frills video features two guitars and the classic fiddle sound. It perfectly accentuates the story of rodeo heartbreak and a cowboy who just has to ride, no matter the cost.
Strait released “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” as the third single from his album Blue Clear Sky in 1996. It’s one of several rodeo-themed songs from Strait’s repertoire, but this one always stood out. Maybe it’s the mix of resilience and heartbreak. Or maybe it’s the twist in the chorus.
Either way, people loved the song. “I Can Still Make Cheyenne” landed on George Strait’s 50 Number Ones, and there’s a good chance it’ll land on the new box set coming out this fall.
Strait personally curated the track listing for Strait Out of the Box: Part 2. The first four-disc collection of tunes covered the beginning of his career in the 70s up through 1995. Since then, the king of country just kept churning out the hits. The new box set is a Wal-Mart exclusive, and you can pre-order it now.
