Police Officer and Carrie Underwood's Childhood Friend Passes Away After Crash

Earlier this month, it was reported that Checotah Asst. Police Chief Justin Durrett was in a rollover accident in his truck on his way to work. His extensive injuries included a broken neck, a bruised spine, injured vertebrae and loss of feeling in his legs.

After hearing about the incident, country star Carrie Underwood quietly donated $10,000 to a GoFundMe account set up to help with his medical expenses under her married name, Carrie Fisher. Underwood and Durrett both grew up in Checotah, Okla. and both attended the same church, so naturally, she wanted to reach out to help.

Tragically, the Checotah Police Department posted to Facebook on Monday that Durrett had passed away after fighting his injuries and resulting infections for as long as he could. "Asst. Police Chief Justin Durrett is a 13-year veteran of the Checotah Police Department and is a loving father of two children and a loving son of Margret and David Prokup of Checotah," the post painfully recounts.

Underwood's large donation brought attention to Durrett's situation, and currently, the campaign to help Durrett's family is about $1,500 shy of a $20,000 goal on GoFundMe. At this time, Underwood hasn't commented on her old friend's passing on social media.
