The two country music superstars appeared on the show in 2009 and sang “I Told You So” together for the first time.
Carrie Underwood was just five years old when Randy Travis released “I Told You So.” More than 20 years later, he became a mentor on American Idol during the show’s Grand Ole Opry week. Underwood, Idol’s season four winner, joined her musical hero on stage to perform a moving version of his iconic song.
Underwood had previously recorded the tune for her second album, Carnival Ride, so a duet with Travis was not surprising.
Their duet on the show led to a studio recording of “I Told You So,” which reached number two on the Billboard country music charts. The pair won a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals at the 52nd Grammy Awards in 2010.
Underwood performed the song on the Opry stage seven years ago. After the song ended Travis officially asked her to join the Grand Ole Opry.
