Back in 2002, an aspiring country singer took the stage in a Nashville mall with the hopes of someday becoming a star. Little did he know, in just a few years he would become the winner of the television singing competition Nashville Star during its fourth season in 2006.
This video, shot inside of the Opry Mills mall outside of Nashville in 2002, shows a teenaged Chris Young confidently performing in front of passing shoppers. Young is only a teenager in this video, shot while he and a friend ran through a list of cover songs during their two-hour set. In this short clip, you’ll see Young as he performs his own rendition of 1990s country singer James Bonamy‘s “Brain in a Jar.”
Current fans of the Tennessee native may have a hard time initially recognizing the skinny-framed singer. Even as a teenager, Young has a surprisingly deep voice that easily grabs your attention.
Although he may be just a teen, the future hitmaker wasn’t afraid to show off a few smooth moves as he strides across the stage. It’s a rare look into the early years of the singer, who will likely remain a force in country music for many more years to come.
