Brantley Gilbert is playing a “Dirty” new song on the road. Yes, the song is actually called “Dirty,” and if you think that tells you just about everything you need to know about it, you’re right.
Gilbert has been playing the song on his current tour, most recently at his show in Bristol, Va., accompanied by huge balls of fire and his always hard rockin’ band. It’s a predictable mess of generic guitar riffs and cliches, like cut-off jeans and dirty roads and parties and “cranking country” and whatnot.
The song sounds a whole heck of a lot like Jason Aldean’s 2009 hit “She’s Country,” which has become a staple of Aldean’s “rock with a twang” style. Gilbert’s vocal growl on the song sits somewhere between a poor man’s Brian Johnson (of AC/DC fame) and a lifelong smoker with severe morning allergies.
If not for the giant video screens of flames, you’d be forced to watch Gilbert half-heartedly pace around the stage like he’s looking for the right workout machine at the gym while his band doesn’t even pretend to act like their into it. Maybe we’ll give them all the benefit of the doubt and say it’s just a little rough around the edges because it’s so new. Or maybe it’s just not a very good song.
“Dirty” will presumably on Gilbert’s next album, which does not yet have a release date. He’s also working on a collaboration with Justin Moore for Moore’s new album Kinda Don’t Care. The song is called “More Middle Fingers,” so we can only assume where that’s headed. Gilbert and Moore previously teamed up for Gilbert’s past single, “Small Town Throwdown.”
