The body of missing Backroad Anthem singer Craig Strickland was found on Monday, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He was 29.
Strickland and his friend Chase Morland disappeared on Dec. 27 after going on a duck hunting trip during the major post-Christmas winter storm.
Prior to their departure, Morland sent out an eerie tweet that foreshadowed the events to come.
Morland’s body was recovered on Dec. 28 along with Strickland’s pet labrador, who was guarding Morland’s body.
On Monday, search and rescue crews found Strickland’s body along the shores of Oklahoma’s Kaw Lake near the site where the pair’s duck-hunting boat was discovered.
Medical examiners determined Strickland died from drowning and exposure to freezing temperatures.
Strickland’s wife, Helen, has since spoken publicly about her husband’s death.
“The night of the accident he had fought his way out of the water and up a hill before the stages of hypothermia set in,” said Helen. “He experienced no pain in his final moments and simply felt like he was falling asleep.”
Helen also revealed that the recovery team found Strickland “lying in the shape of a cross looking up to his Father.”
While this is a tragic ending to the search that was filled with hope last week, we are glad that recovery teams were able to find the bodies of both men.
You can only imagine the suffering both families are experiencing right now, so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
