UPDATE: According to Billy Joe Shaver’s publicist Cary Baker, the country singer suffered from a bout of food poisoning that was not life-threatening. Shaver plans to return to the road sometime in late June.
Billy Joe Shaver has been forced to cancel dozens of tour dates after being hospitalized with a bout of food poisoning.
Fans of the 76-year-old outlaw country singer have grown concern with the news of multiple concerts being cancelled over the past two weeks due to unnamed health issues. Shaver opted to address the rumors by sharing a personal update through his Facebook page.
“I was on my deathbed for two days. I came back to kick some more ass,” he wrote.” Please stop calling my phone its ringing off the hook. See you on tour soon. Love you all.”
According to Saving Country Music, Shaver’s publicist Cary Baker of Conqueroo also shared a statement in regards to Shaver’s current health situation.
“He’s alive,” he writes. “He has indeed canceled tour dates for the rest of May, and part of early June. But he’s supposed to be back out there in late June. He is in the hospital, and I know there have been rumors here and there. He’s an old guy, and he’s had hips replaced and knees replaced, but he’s alive and kicking.”
It’s no surprise that country fans would be nervous about Shaver being hospitalized for what seemed to be a serious illness so shortly after the loss of his contemporary Merle Haggard, but thankfully he seems well on the road to recovery.
Although all of his remaining dates for May and June have been canceled, Shaver is still scheduled to perform at the 4th of July celebration at the Austin360 Amphitheater.
