Well, we didn’t see this one coming. Beyonce will perform during tonight’s CMA Awards.
A tweet from Good Morning America confirmed the news on Wednesday, just a few hours before the ceremony is scheduled to kick off. It’s a surprising turn of events, considering the show has been advertised as a tribute to the classic roots of country music. However, the CMAs have been a champion of collaborations between country acts and artists from rock, pop and other genres in recent years.
So far, it’s unclear what song Beyonce will perform or if she’ll be singing alongside any other artists. Many are speculating that the pop icon will do a version of her Lemonade cut “Daddy Issues.” Some have noted it as being her most country-leaning track, although it’s really more Zydeco-inspired than anything else. Still, the song also stood out to the Dixie Chicks, who’ve added a countrified cover of the song to their current DCX MMXVI World Tour set list.
So will the Chicks themselves come out for a mind-blowing cross-genre duet? It’s hard to say, especially since the trio haven’t been seen at many country award shows since their George W. Bush debacle back in 2003.
Fans will just have to see what Beyonce has up her sleeve when the 50th annual CMA Awards air live tonight (Nov. 2) at 8/7 central on ABC.
