Ben Haggard, the youngest son of late country legend Merle Haggard, has just inked a songwriting deal with BMI.
The 23-year-old artist has been on the road the past few months performing a series of dates his father had been scheduled to play prior to his death in April. Before Merle’s passing, Ben acted as the lead guitarist for his backup band The Stranglers. Recently, he’s also gained attention for his video covers of classic country songs, including a few of his father’s biggest hits. Now, Ben is focusing in on creating a career of his own.
So what does a songwriting deal with BMI really entail?
“BMI is a place that signs writers, It collects license fees on behalf of songwriters, composers, and music publishers and distributes them as royalties to those members whose works have been performed,” Haggard shared through a post on his Facebook page. “BMI has 80% of today’s artists signed like Taylor Swift. They have also signed Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and of course Merle Haggard.”
It’s a great next step for the young talent, who is quickly making a name for himself in country music. Hopefully this deal will bring more great music from Haggard to the forefront sooner rather than later. Until then, enjoy Ben’s incredible rendition of Merle Haggard’s ‘If I Could Only Fly’.
