For the first time since 2007, Garth Brooks just returned to the top of the radio charts with his song “Ask Me How I Know.” That brings his overall career total of No. 1 songs to 20.

“I’m so proud of the Pearl Records team for working so hard for this No. 1,” Brooks says in a press release. “Congrats to Mitch Rossell on his first cut. So happy for you, pal! And, to country radio: four decades later, thanks for still believing. I’m humbled and very grateful.”

Songwriter Mitch Rossell wrote the tune by himself.

Now, something like a No. 1 single may not seem like that big of a deal for Brooks. He is, after all, one of the top grossing artists of all time and his current tour is shattering records left and right. With more than 6 million tickets sold and 330 shows already in the books, the tour eclipsed $300 million in gross revenue.

But in a radio world dominated by major label acts and young guns, Brooks’ return is significant. For one, it’s not his first single since coming back. Heck, “Ask Me How I Know” isn’t even from his first album since returning.

But, it is his first No. 1 single as an independent artist. Brooks launched Pearl Records for himself and wife Trisha Yearwood. Even cooler, “Ask Me How I Know” hit No. 1 the same week as his very first No. 1 single, “If Tomorrow Never Comes,” all the way back in 1989.

“Ask Me How I Know” Lyrics

You’re stubborn as they come, you’ll never settle down
You’ll always be the one who doesn’t stick around
You make all the rules, you’re set in your ways
You gotta have your freedom, you gotta have your space

Cause one day you’ll meet the girl you swore you’d never find
Start feeling things you never felt and spending all your time
Trying to figure out how she got this hold on you
And when you start to fall, you’ll hold onto your pride
Start building up your walls and never let her get inside
You’ll push her away ’cause that’s all you know how to do
And then she’ll leave and you won’t beg her not to go
Ask me how I know

Go on and shake your head and tell me that I’m wrong
Say, “I’m just another fool and this is just another song”
But I know how you are ’cause I know how I am
And I’d give anything to go back and try again

Cause one day you’ll meet the girl you swore you’d never find
Start feeling things you never felt and spending all your time
Trying to figure out how she got this hold on you
And when you start to fall, you’ll hold onto your pride
Start building up your walls and never let her get inside
You’ll push her away ’cause that’s all you know how to do
And then she’ll leave and you won’t beg her not to go
Ask me how I know

And you best put this song on repeat
Maybe then you won’t end up like me

Cause one day you’ll meet the girl you swore you’d never find
Start feeling things you never felt and spending all your time
Trying to figure out how she got this hold on you
And when you start to fall, you’ll hold onto your pride
Start building up your walls and never let her get inside
You’ll push her away ’cause that’s all you know how to do
And then she’ll leave and you won’t beg her not to go
Ask me how I know

Ask me how I know
Cause man I know
