American Idol contestant Trent Harmon took a risk during his Feb. 17 performance by covering Chris Stapleton‘s debut single, “What Are You Listening To.”
The 24-year-old’s twangy and soulful rendition won the heart of judge Jennifer Lopez, who shared her love of Harmon’s take on Stapleton’s distinctive sound.
“I feel like when you sing, it really gets to my heart,” she explained. “There’s something that happens when you sing. It’s the tone of your voice. It’s the feeling that you sing with. You really have something that I feel is going to be in the competition for a long time.”
Fellow judge Keith Urban also sang the praises of Harmon’s unconventional song choice. “What’s really interesting about it is that no one really knows it, but it’s such a good song with such a good lyric that when you hit the ‘what are you listening to?’ everybody here was like, ‘Oh, that’s a great song! What a cool song!’” Urban exclaimed. “And you sang it really well.”
Harmon’s performance helped land him in the final Top 14 of the reality singing competition’s final season. Click below to see Trent Harmon’s rendition of Chris Stapleton’s “What Are You Listening To” on American Idol.
