There is no shortage of country singers who have chosen to flex their acting chops in films over the last few decades. Many of our favorite country artists have journeyed into other areas of entertainment and had great success in doing so. Here are seven of those artists and their best big screen roles.
Dolly Parton in ‘Joyful Noise’
Dolly Parton has appeared in numerous films and TV shows since the beginning of her career. Her most notable film is arguably Joyful Noise where she starred opposite of Queen Latifah and really got to showcase her acting chops with a large amount of screen-time. We would be remiss, though, not to give honorable mention to her 1980 film 9 to 5 in which she played a secretary named Doralee.
Tim McGraw in ‘The Blind Side’
Based on a true story, the inspirational film The Blind Side really highlighted McGraw’s acting talent. In it, he plays Sean Tuohy, husband to Sandra Bullock’s character Leigh Ann Tuohy. McGraw received rave reviews for his performance in the movie. Honorable mentions go to his roles in Friday Night Lights (one of his first films) as Charles Billingsley and Country Strong as James Carter.
Dwight Yoakam in ‘Sling Blade’
Yoakam has become a critically acclaimed actor on top of his illustrious music career. He’s acted in over 30 films and TV shows since the early ’90s. His role as the abusive, alcoholic Doyle in Sling Blade garnered him a lot of attention in the acting world. You may also remember his performance in the thriller Panic Room, which certainly deserves an honorable mention.
Reba McEntire in ‘Tremors’
Tremors is a classic, and we’ll never forget Reba’s role in it – or her hair. She portrayed Heather Gummer and starred alongside Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter and Michael Gross. Tremors was Reba’s first acting role and led to a wealth of appearances on TV shows and even her own self-titled, long-running series.
Kris Kristofferson in ‘Blade’ and ‘A Star is Born’
With everything that Kristofferson has been in, it’s impossible to choose just one. Not only is he an iconic musician, but his film career has been huge. Many have come to love him as an actor from seeing him in the Blade Trilogy movies where he portrays Whistler — Blade’s mentor.
We can’t bring up Kristofferson’s acting career and not mention A Star is Born. The 1976 film earned him a Golden Globe for Best Actor. After nearly four decades, Kristofferson isn’t done acting yet!
An honorable mention goes to the 1984 film Songwriter which earned him an Oscar nomination and also starred Willie Nelson. Currently, Kristofferson is starring in a Western called Traded which is set to release in June.
Willie Nelson in ‘Honeysuckle Rose’
Nelson’s appearance in Honeysuckle Rose was one of his most memorable. Nelson was the star of the 1980 film and portrayed a married, touring country singer caught in a love triangle. Also notable, was Nelson’s appearance in Stagecoach, which also starred Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson.
Faith Hill in ‘Stepford Wives’
Faith Hill has only been in a handful of films over the last two decades, she was perfect in Stepford Wives. The Nicole Kidman-led movie was all about robotic housewives, and Hill played one of them. Hill also recently starred in indie-flick Dixieland, which made its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival last year.
Trace Adkins in ‘The Lincoln Lawyer’
Adkins has acted in several films, but his role in The Lincoln Lawyer sticks out in our minds the most. Adkins played Eddie, the leader of a biker gang, to perfection. He’s also starring in Traded with Kristofferson.
