"Bird On A Wire" The Tedeschi Trucks Band

The best band on the road is back with a live record that captures their skills at the peak of their prowess. The standout track on the Tedeschi Trucks Band's Live From the Fox Oakland is Susan Tedeschi's gospel revival of Leonard Cohen's "Bird On A Wire." A lot of greats have tackled this song and made it their own, but Tedeschi and company have my new favorite. The last chorus is an emotional gut punch that will bring you to your knees.

"Wheels" Steve Moakler

Steve Moakler, one of Nashville's most promising singer-songwriters, has a knack for writing relatable, modern country music that doesn't feel contrived. "Wheels," the single from his new album, Steel Town, captures the journey from youth to old age using the metaphor of wheels.

"East Houston Blues" Rodney Crowell

Rodney Crowell's new album, Close Ties, is a window into the country troubadour's past. "East Houston Blues" recounts his rough-and-rowdy youth spent in the Bayou City. From petty crimes to broken family life, Crowell fills you in on a significant period in his formative years.

"Codeine Dream" Colter Wall

Canadian folk singer Colter Wall channels the hardscrabble singer-songwriters of the 70's in his new single,  "Codeine Dream." Wall sounds like he could be a contemporary of Blaze Foley and Townes Van Zandt. I was surprised to learn he's only 21 years old.

"Damned (If You Do)" The Mavericks

The Mavericks are back with Brand New Day, their first record since leaving Big Machine Label Group. The lead single "Damned (If You Do)," captures their signature, sexy blend of Latin music, country and rock and roll. Read our review of Brand New Day.
