Ah, the state fair. No matter where you live, the state fair is going to be a fascinating cross-section of every segment of our society. From the average joes to the super rich to the oddballs, you can find every kind of person at a state fair. Which is why it stands to reason that you’ll also find an enormous variety of foods. There are, of course, a few similarities to be found in the fare at most fairs; you’ll find desserts masquerading as entrees, entrees masquerading as desserts, several offerings that are “on a stick”, and/or fried, and of course, the food has to be convenient to carry around as you’re walking from Ferris Wheel to Ferris Wheel. We’ve scoured the nation and came up with 10 of the strangest, and possibly most delicious foods found at state fairs

10. Hot Beef Sundae – Indiana
It’s not what you’re thinking, there’s no ice cream in this sundae. Instead you’ll find mashed potatoes, cheese, beef, gravy, corn and a cherry tomato on top.
9. Wine Fried Kalettes – Minnesota
If you thought you were safe from vegetables in the fried-food haven that is the state fair, think again. Minnesota has managed to sneak kale into their state fair. The dark green leaves are deep fried at least, and served with a sweet chili Thai sauce that might *actually* make it palatable.
8. Fried Jelly Beans – Massachusetts
Yes, you read that right. Fried. Jelly. Beans. The Easter candy is rolled in funnel cake batter and deep fried, served with a dusting of powdered sugar. We’re not so sure what the easter bunny would have to say about this one.
7. Fried Bubble Gum – Texas
Okay, so it’s not actually bubble gum, but bubble gum flavored marsh-mallows that are (what else?) deep-fried. It does have chiclets sprinkled on top, however, so there’s that.
6. Bacon-Wrapped Caramel Apples – Oklahoma
A salty twist on the standard fair treat, you can find this bacony goodness at the Oklahoma State Fair.
5. Salad on a Stick – Iowa
So this is basically like your mom trying to sneak something healthy into your lunch even though she knows you’re just going to eat your PB&J and chips. Props for trying, Iowa.
4. Kool-Aid Pickles – North Carolina
These must be a hit for pregnant ladies. To achieve the bright red color, the pickles are brined in kool-aid, thus the name.
3. Deep Fried Green Jell-o – Utah
Apparently, they really love Jell-o in Utah, so much so that the governor declared it the state’s official snack in 2001, and some crafty cooks at the Utah state fair figured out how to deep-fry America’s favorite gelatin treat.
2. Python Kebabs – California
If you expected to find the aforementioned fried kale in the very health-conscious state of California, you’ll be sadly disappointed. Rather, you can get yourself a python kebab, which is exactly what it sounds like — chopped python grilled on a stick with vegetables. Odd or not, it’s still healthier than many other state fair foods.
1. Deep-Fried Scorpion – Arizona
Arizonans are making good use of a renewable resource by deep frying and dipping in chocolate real scorpions. Though the stingers have been removed, it’s safe to say these are only for the fearless foodie.
