Tahlequah, Oklahoma natives The Turnpike Troubadours just may be your favorite country band you’ve never heard of. The quintet falls somewhere between the Red Dirt and traditional country labels, but whatever you want to call it, they write damn good songs.
Even Felker and R.C. Edwards handle the bulk of songwriting. They manage to spin tales that captivate and never lose their sense of sincerity. Whether it’s a thoughtful one-liner or a longer theme that weaves through the whole song, you can’t help but feel they’re singing exactly how you’ve felt at some point in life.
Only two records in (minus a now unavailable release from 2007), the boys show amazing promise. Here are 10 lyrics that will make you fall in love with the Turnpike Troubadours — just in time for their new album coming out on September 18th.
10. But I’m stuck here in Tulsa with my Oklahoma blues — with a pair of concrete shoes that got me sinking pretty low. And I would buy for you a diamond, or myself some gasoline; if I can’t afford you darling, then I can’t afford to dream.
9. Here’s to hoping she’ll still come. I’m too old to be this dumb.
8. What if you’d been true? You better look me in the eyes. All I smell is cheap perfume, and gin, and smoke, and lies.
7. Jordan played accordion, dropped out of college. Cookie was a drummer in a punk rock band. Me, I’m just a wallflower soaking up knowledge; my heart on my sleeve and a beer in my hand.
